Thoughts of people:

„Are you focusing on a certain point in your body? In Zen they say you should focus on a certain spot to find peace…“

Better concentration
When we want to find peace and bring our mind into stillness, we can direct our attention to a point in our body. But even here we must recognize: it is the mind that seeks support, that wants to hold on and focus. It bundles our energy onto one goal – the focus itself. This conscious focusing can help us become aware of our thoughts and minimize distractions. However, we should be aware that in this moment, all our energy flows into the concentration on a specific point.
The present moment – pure being – is something the mind may want to grasp but never will. The deep peace of the now, pure being, cannot be captured by fixating on a spot or through intellectual understanding. We can only use the focus as a tool to recognize the nature of our mind.
True being – the natural flow of life, the deep primal trust in everything that is – lies beyond that. It is a clear, vibrant moment that we can perceive without ever truly grasping, focusing, or controlling it. It is the state of pure naturalness that unfolds when we let go of all striving and simply perceive.

Personal Experience

Over time, I have tried many things and left nothing untried. Not only in my outer world was I searching for the truth. Also in my inner world – in my mind. A multitude of meditations, techniques, and practices were meant to help me find clarity. The striving for more inside my head – to finally find out what the real truth is – was strong.
But soon I realized that our own „truth“ arises from our thoughts, and that the actual state – the state of deep peace, of being, of the present moment – will always remain an inexplicable state. The more we try to find it, the more it slips away from us. In Zen they say that you should focus on a certain spot – like the breath – for more clarity. And yes, this technique can help you to see more clearly, to find more of yourself, to bring peace to your mind. But it is still just a technique. Deep peace, the all-encompassing being, that which humans long for, is neither found in thoughts nor in focusing in a certain direction.

Procedure

Be aware that your mind also wants to hold itself through focus. You can focus to find peace – yes. But you will not reach the present moment through focusing with the mind. The present moment simply is – it is a state. In this moment, there is nothing to understand, nothing to grasp, nothing to focus on. So don’t even try. This clear space, this state of deep freedom, is already within you. You don’t need to fixate on anything or anyone – you only need to let go of your thoughts. That’s all it takes.
If you do not yet feel this deep peace, it is because you are still sending your energy into your mind – into unresolved issues, into identifications with the past or the future. Gain clarity about the mechanisms of your mind and your unconscious patterns. Recognize: Deep peace and true being are not found through focusing on a particular point. Focus serves merely as a bridge to consciously perceive your thoughts – not to reach being itself.

Use the following questions for self-reflection:

  • What can I do to move my thoughts into stillness?
  • Which techniques and methods can I use – which are truly valuable to me – to find more of myself?
  • What kind of support do I need to work through unconscious issues (family, past, painful experiences)?
  • What am I striving for – where am I searching for myself – what is my mind seeking?
